The nearest something solid, as it so often is these days, is Lieutenant Archibald Kennedy. Out here in public he can't offer Horatio his hand, but at the very least he can offer him his arm. The sea is just bumpy enough, after all, that that's a justifiable thing.
His smile may not be, quite so much, but surely two young men about to experience one of the best days of their careers are allowed to grin just a little boyishly at one another.
(And Archie's smile is, in many ways, boyish. Archie's smile is so much that bright thing that touched his lips long before the hurts of this world had started to truly chip away at his spirit. It's a smile that, in so many ways, has become his one specifically for Horatio.)
